Short answer: Improve line of sight, antenna match, height and noise environment before raising power. LoRa link margin often gains more from a correctly polarized antenna above obstructions than from small transmitter-power increases.

Before you start​

  • Set the correct regional radio profile before testing; frequency plan, permitted power and duty-cycle constraints depend on location.
  • Use the same modem preset, channel settings and channel key on nodes that are expected to communicate.

Step-by-step method​

  1. Step 1: Create a fixed route and record RSSI, SNR, delivery success, hop count, modem preset and antenna height in both directions.
  2. Step 2: Move one node higher and clear the first Fresnel zone where practical. Keep antennas vertical and away from batteries, displays and metal enclosures.
  3. Step 3: Verify the antenna is designed for the regional band and connector. Compare stock and replacement antennas without changing preset or power.
  4. Step 4: Only after placement is optimized, choose the slowest modem preset that meets capacity and latency needs while staying within regional duty-cycle rules.

Concrete example​

Moving a node from waist height behind a concrete wall to a 3 m outdoor mast can add more reliable range than a legal small power increase. Record both directions because an asymmetric antenna or noise source can hide the benefit.

How to judge the result​

Range improved when delivery percentage and link margin rise on the same route without excessive retries, duty-cycle warnings or loss of network capacity.

What to record​

  • Record RSSI, SNR, hop count, delivery success and antenna height for a fixed route instead of quoting one maximum-distance message.
  • Line of sight, Fresnel clearance and antenna placement usually improve range more effectively than additional transmit power.
  • For solar nodes, calculate daily energy use and worst-month solar input, then include battery reserve for poor weather.

Common mistakes​

  • Changing several hardware, software or RF variables at once, which removes the controlled comparison needed to identify the cause.
  • Treating one autoscaled screenshot or one unusually good result as proof without recording the settings and repeating the test.
  • Quoting one maximum-distance packet as range ignores reliability, terrain, antenna height and whether the return path worked.

Final check​

Power-cycle both nodes and repeat the same bidirectional route test. Save region, preset, antenna, RSSI, SNR and delivery rate while keeping channel keys and precise locations private.
