Short answer: Install a WinUSB-compatible driver on the RTL-SDR receiver interface, open a supported receiver application, select the RTL-SDR source and prove reception with a strong local FM station. Windows detecting a USB device is not enough; the SDR application must be able to open the raw I/Q interface.

Before you start​

  • Use one strong, known local signal for the first test. FM broadcast is convenient in many countries because the expected modulation and audio are easy to recognize.
  • Write down the receiver model, antenna, operating system, application and sample rate. If the result changes, this record shows which variable actually changed.

Step-by-step method​

  1. Step 1: Connect the dongle directly to the computer with its antenna attached. Open Device Manager and note the new device so an unrelated keyboard, Bluetooth adapter or composite interface is not modified.
  2. Step 2: Run Zadig as administrator, enable List All Devices, select the RTL-SDR receiver interface and install WinUSB. On common composite dongles this is often Interface 0, but identify it from the actual device rather than copying the number blindly.
  3. Step 3: Open SDR++, SDR# or another RTL-SDR application. Select RTL-SDR as the source, choose the detected dongle, set about 2.048 or 2.4 MSPS and start with manual tuner gain around 20 to 30 dB.
  4. Step 4: Tune a known FM station, select WFM, use roughly 150 to 200 kHz demodulator bandwidth, disable squelch for the test and select the correct Windows audio output. Save this baseline before installing decoders or plug-ins.

Concrete example​

Example baseline: RTL-SDR connected to a motherboard USB port, 2.048 MSPS, manual gain 28 dB, WFM mode and a 180 kHz filter on a strong local broadcast station. The exact gain is not a target; reduce it if the band fills with images or increase it only while the station improves relative to the noise.

How to judge the result​

The setup is working when the application can stop and restart the dongle, the expected station appears at the correct approximate frequency, and intelligible audio continues without repeated USB errors. A moving waterfall with no recognizable signal does not yet prove a correct RF setup.

What to record​

  • A useful first result is repeatable: the same station appears at the same frequency after restarting the application.
  • Judge reception by signal-to-noise ratio and intelligible audio, not by how bright the entire waterfall looks.
  • Change only one control at a time and wait several seconds before deciding whether it helped.

Common mistakes​

  • Changing several hardware, software or RF variables at once, which removes the controlled comparison needed to identify the cause.
  • Treating one autoscaled screenshot or one unusually good result as proof without recording the settings and repeating the test.
  • Using Zadig on every listed interface or on the wrong USB device can break an unrelated Windows driver. Change only the receiver interface that belongs to the RTL-SDR.

Final check​

Restart the receiver application and repeat the known-signal test with the saved settings. A beginner baseline is complete only when the same signal, mode and audio result can be reproduced without guessing.
