How to Measure Antenna SWR with a NanoVNA

Short answer: Calibrate one-port reflection at the end of the feedline or adapter where the antenna will connect, then display S11 SWR and impedance across the target band. SWR shows mismatch magnitude; it does not by itself prove radiation efficiency or antenna gain.

Before you start​

  • Check maximum RF input level and DC tolerance before connecting a transmitter, powered line or unknown source to test equipment.
  • Warm up the instrument, use known cables and adapters, and calibrate at the connector plane where the device under test will be attached.

Step-by-step method​

  1. Step 1: Set a span wider than the desired band and perform open-short-load calibration at the antenna feed plane. Support the coax so movement does not change the measurement.
  2. Step 2: Connect the antenna in its real mounting position, away from your hands and temporary metal objects. Read the frequency of minimum SWR and check resistance plus reactance near the target.
  3. Step 3: If resonance is low, shorten the intended tuning element in small equal steps; if high, lengthen it where the design permits. Reconnect and sweep after every change.
  4. Step 4: Save before/after traces and verify the final usable bandwidth, not only the deepest single-frequency dip. Recheck after weatherproofing and permanent installation.

Concrete example​

An antenna reading 1.3:1 at 102 MHz but 2.5:1 at the desired 109 MHz is resonant too low for that target. Shortening the active element should move resonance upward, but the amount depends on design and surroundings.

How to judge the result​

The antenna match is acceptable when SWR and impedance meet the transmitter or receive-system requirement across the full operating band and the result repeats after reconnecting.

What to record​

  • Save frequency span, calibration state, attenuation, reference level and connector plane with every result.
  • Repeat the measurement after reconnecting the device; a large change often points to a poor adapter, cable or calibration.
  • Use a VNA for reflection and network measurements, and a spectrum analyzer for signal energy versus frequency.

Common mistakes​

  • Changing several hardware, software or RF variables at once, which removes the controlled comparison needed to identify the cause.
  • Treating one autoscaled screenshot or one unusually good result as proof without recording the settings and repeating the test.
  • A low-SWR dummy load is a poor antenna; never use SWR alone as proof that an antenna radiates or receives efficiently.

Final check​

Reconnect the standards or device under test and repeat the measurement without changing the calibration plane. Save the span, calibration, attenuation and uncertainty with the result.
