Short answer: A useful build log explains the goal, complete signal chain, versions, settings, measured result, failed attempts and next change. It should let another member reproduce the working baseline without guessing from a finished desk photo.
Before you start
- Define the project's purpose and one measurable success criterion before listing hardware.
- Document the complete RF and data path, including antenna, feedline, filters, gain, SDR, sample rate, software and processing output.
Step-by-step method
- Step 1: Begin with one measurable target, such as decode 137 MHz weather images from passes above 40 degrees, rather than build satellite station.
- Step 2: List antenna, feedline, filters, LNA, SDR, clock, power, computer, OS and software versions in signal-flow order.
- Step 3: Record configuration files or essential values, test conditions and raw metrics. Add dated changes one at a time with before/after results.
- Step 4: Include failures and why they were rejected, then end with the current known limitation and next test. Redact coordinates, credentials and protected signal content.
